MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan swept its first-ever meetings with Seattle University Wednesday afternoon at Theunissen Stadium, extending its season-long winning streak to seven games.
The Chippewas evened their record at 25-25 on the season with the sweep, helping mark their longest winning streak since 2007 when they won 10 straight. They will look to even the streak of 10 games from 2007 when they take on Ball State for three games in Mid-American Conference play this weekend at Theunissen Stadium.
Senior Tyler Hall led the Chippewas, driving in two runs in each of the wins, while senior Jon Weaver earned his first win of the season in game one and his fourth save of the year in game two by pitching two scoreless innings.
Game One
Senior Sam Russell scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to give the Chippewas a walk-off victory, 8-7, in game one of the doubleheader.
Russell walked to lead off the inning, moved to second on a single by junior Jordan Adams, took third on a bunt single by redshirt freshman Nick Regnier and eventually scored the game-winning run on the first pitch to senior Eric Wrozek.
Trailing, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth, Hall hit a RBI single to plate redshirt freshman Pat MacKenzie and senior William Arnold hit a three-run homer two batters later to give CMU its first lead of the game, 7-3. The home run was Arnold's fifth of the season and his first since hitting four in the season-opening series at Troy.
The Redhawks (21-22) were able to tie things up in the next frame however, scoring three runs on back-to-back singles and a bases loaded walk.
Weaver came on in the top of the seventh and needed just nine pitches to sit the Redhawks down in order and earn the win.
Adams finished 3-for-4 at the plate, while Wrozek scored twice to aid Hall's two-RBI performance and Arnold's three-run homer.
Game Two
Junior Rick Dodridge threw five scoreless innings and seniors Ryan Longstreth and Jon Weaver locked down the back end of the game to give the Chippewas the doubleheader sweep, 4-1.
The Maroon and Gold struck in the first inning to take the lead, 1-0, when Hall led off with a single and came around to score on a RBI single by Russell.
Junior Reid Rooney led off the second with a single, and a walk to MacKenzie set the table for Hall to rip a two-RBI ground-rule double down the right field line, extending the CMU lead to 3-0. Junior Jordan Dean singled in the next at bat to push Hall across for the Chippewas' final offense of the day and a 4-0 advantage.
The Redhawks threatened in the fourth by putting the first two runners on with a walk and a single, but Dodridge was able to strike out the next three batters to keep his line clean.
The junior struck out his fifth batter of the game and worked around a two-out double in the top of the fifth by inducing a pop out to close the inning before being pulled in relief of redshirt freshman Dylan Rheault.
Rheault struggled to find his command and lasted just a third of an inning, giving up a run and leaving the bases loaded for Longstreth. The senior lefty was able to get a swinging strikeout and induce a groundout to end the SU threat.
Longstreth pitched two more scoreless innings before Weaver came on in the ninth to close the game. Weaver gave up back-to-back singles to put the potential game-tying run at the plate, but struck out pinch hitter Zach Aaker to earn his fourth save of the season.
Rooney finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Hall went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs.
