MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan men’s basketball fans will get their first glimpse of the 2013-14 squad in action on Monday night when the Chippewas host Lake Superior State in an exhibition contest set for 7 p.m. in McGuirk Arena. CMU defeated the Lakers, 86-76, last season in exhibition action, led by 17 points and six rebounds from forward Zach Saylor. The Chippewas will open regular season play on Friday, Nov. 8 when they welcome Manchester to McGuirk Arena for a 2:30 p.m. matinee. Central Michigan Notes • Second-year head coach Keno Davis returns eight lettermen and four starters for the 2013-14 season. • The Chippewas’ roster is marked by youth, as 10 of its 13 scholarship players are underclassmen. • Headlining the group of returnees is sophomore guard Chris Fowler, who broke the program’s freshman assist record and earned All-MAC Freshman Team honors last season. • Also back are sophomore forwards Blake Hibbitts, who averaged 8.9 points per game and led CMU with 67 three-pointers and John Simons, who topped the Chippewas in rebounds with 151 in addition to veteran forward Zach Saylor, who was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA in the offseason. • Bolstering the roster are five newcomers who are scholarship players, including seven-foot center Milos Cabarkapa, guard/forward Nick Carlos and guards Josh Kozinski, Braylon Rayson and Rayshawn Simmons. • CMU will spend much of the early portion of its schedule at home as, including the exhibition versus LSSU, the Chippewas will play seven games in McGuirk before the month of December. Lake Superior State Notes • Lake Superior State finished with a 16-13 record last season, including an 8-4 mark in GLIAC play. • The Lakers return their leading scorer in senior guard Derek Billing (15.2 ppg), a Second Team All-GLIAC honoree in 2012, and their leader in assists, junior guard Jorddan Myrick (3.8 apg). • Third-year assistant coach Tim Kisner played for CMU from 1998-2001, becoming the first point guard to total 1,000 career points and 400 assists in program history.
