Soccer Kicks Off Conference Play with Ohio Road Trip

| MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan soccer team will begin MAC competition for the first time under head coach Peter McGahey this weekend. • CMU will play at Kent State on Friday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. and will continue its road trip at Ohio on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. • CMU (0-7-1) concluded its non-conference schedule with a 1-0 setback at home against Dayton last weekend. The game marked Central Michigan's first home game in nearly a month. • Senior forward Nicole Samuel's presence was felt last Friday for CMU when she nearly scored booting the ball past the Flyer goalkeeper and making contact with the inner post. • The Chippewa scoring attack is led by the duo of junior midfielder Emily Cooksey, junior forward Laura Gosse and Jennifer Gassman. • Cooksey leads the team with 18 shots, including nine on goal, and one goal. Gosse and Gassman also have each tallied one goal this season. • Senior goalkeeper Grace Labrecque made her third appearance in net, recording six saves against Dayton. • Freshman Heather Laeufer and redshirt freshman Maddy Bunnell have also made appearances in net this season for CMU. Laeufer leads the team with four starts and 23 saves this season. • Kent State (5-3-0) downed Youngstown State, 3-0, at home on Friday, Sept. 20. The shutout was led by sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Senn who tallied three saves. Senn has three shutouts this season and 11 total in her career. • Senior forward Jessacca Gironda led the Golden Flashes offensively on Friday with four shots and a goal. Gironda ranks ranks sixth in Kent State history in career points (52) and fifth in career goals (20). • Ohio (4-1-2) is currently riding a five-game unbeaten streak after posting a 0-0 draw with Cleveland State on Friday, Sept. 20. • Senior midfielder Maggie Murnane leads the Bobcats scoring attack with three goals, seven points, 14 shots and a .714 shot percentage. • Senior goalkeeper Mattie Liston has appeared in net for every Bobcat victory this season. She has recorded 21 saves and two shutouts this season. • The Chippewas will begin a four-game home stint when they take on rival Western Michigan on Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. at the CMU Soccer Complex. | |
