Cross Country Recognizes Four Academic All-MAC Selections

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Central Michigan men’s and women’s cross country teams claimed four Academic All-MAC Selections the team office announced Wednesday.
The Mid-American Conference announced the 2013 Academic All-MAC team recognizing senior Krista Parks and sophomores Breanne Lesnar and Kelly Schubert as Academic All-MAC honorees. On the men’s squad sophomore Monte Scott was also honored for his academic achievements.
Parks, a psychology major with a 3.22 GPA was a first team All-MAC selection this season earning All-MAC honors for the fourth-consecutive season, the only student-athlete to do so in CMU women’s cross country history. The Kentwood, Mich. native placed sixth all time on the top-25 5k performers in 2013 with a 17:45.4 finish at the Notre Dame Invitational in October. Parks led CMU as the top finisher six out of seven meets during her senior campaign, including a seventh place finish at the MAC Championships with a time of 21:31. This is the second time in her distinguished career that Parks has been an Academic All-MAC Selection, receiving the honor in 2010.
Lesnar, a health education major who boasts a 3.96 GPA was a second team All-MAC selection during the 2013 season. She was the top finisher for the women’s squad placing 45th overall in a career best 21:32 at the 6k NCAA Great Lakes Regional Meet. The sophomore finished eighth in 21:32.39 at the MAC Championships.
Schubert, an undeclared major with a 3.95 GPA ran a 5k personal best finishing fifth overall in 18:41 at the Jeff Drenth Memorial Race to start the season. The sophomore was CMU’s female runner-up at the Roy Griak Invitational with a time of 22:21 and at the Indiana State Pre-National 6k Race with a time of 21:48. She went on to conclude the season with a 12th place finish at the 6k MAC Championships with a time of 21:44 and as the third best CMU women's runner at the 6k Great Lakes Regional Meet with a career-best time of 21:37.
Scott, a biology major with a 3.90 GPA ran to a 24th place finish at the Jeff Drenth Memorial 5k in 17:18. The sophomore placed 43rd with a time of 26:21 at the 8k MAC Championships to round out the scoring line-up for CMU.
Selection to the All-MAC Academic Team requires that the student-athlete achieve a minimum cumulative 3.20 GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests.
On the women's side, redshirt freshman Esther Bell recceived honorable mention. Sophomore Nate Ghena and juniors Alec Hewitt and Ethan Lievense were recognized as honorable mention by the conference on the men's squad.
