Kelto, Lesnar Lead CMU Women to Eighth Place Finish

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Central Michigan women placed eighth and the men were 24th Friday in the Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational.
The Chippewa women finished with 248 points in the 5K Gold race, which comprised 27 teams including Mid-American Conference members Ball State and Western Michigan. The Chippewas finished ahead of both the Cardinals and Broncos.
Grand Valley State, the nation's top-ranked team in Division II, won the event with 58 points.
The CMU men finished with 538 points. Michigan, ranked 19th, won the event with 97.
Senior Abbey Kelto led the Chippewa women with a seven-place finish in 17 minutes, 7 seconds. Teammate Breanne Lesnar placed 13th in 17:13.6.
Also for the Chippewas, Esther Bell and Melinda Palinkas finished 75th and 76th, respectively, and Hannah Davis was 80th. Bell finished in 18:05.1, Palinkas in 18:05.5, and Davis in 18:07.7.
"We still have to work on closing our gap between our two and three because there was about 50 seconds between runners two and three," CMU associate coach Matt Kaczor said.
The Chippewas' Michaela Bundy was 113th and Jamie Madrigal was 136th. Maria McDaniel of Western Michigan won the race in 16:46.0.
Nate Ghena led the CMU men with a 54th-place finish in 24:15.3, while Silas Dekalita was 82nd in 24:25.3.
Also for the Chippewas, Spencer Nousain was 128th (24:47.8), Joseph Emmanuel was 147th (24:56.3), Ethan Lievense was 159th (25:07.9), Alec Toreki was 174th (25:20.4), Tanner Pesonen was 183rd (25:39.0) and Monte Scott was 195th (26:06.3).
Mason Ferlic of Michigan was first in 23:15.7.
