MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan's Abbey Kelto will run in the NCAA Cross Country Championships next week.
Kelto, a senior from Munising who transferred to CMU from Michgian State, ran to a 16th place finish Friday in the Great Lakes Cross Country Regional at Wisconsin's Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course.
Kelto was the fourth runner to cross the finish line from a team that did not qualify for the NCAA Championships. As such, she earned a berth in the Nov. 22 finals at Indiana State.
Kelto couldn't celebrate her achievement immediately after Friday's regional race, because she did not know whether or not she made the NCAA field until all eight regionals, held at various courses across the country, were completed.
Kelto finished the 6K regional race in 20 minutes, 30 seconds.
"It couldn't have happened to a better person," CMU coach Matt Kaczor said. "She's a quiet person, does her work and doesn't boast about it. She's a blue-collar worker and that's why you're seeing her succeed."
