| MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan University baseball team will attempt to remain perfect in the Mid-American Conference this weekend when it entertains Miami (Ohio) in a three-game series at Theunissen Stadium. The Chippewas swept a three-game set from Ohio last weekend to get off to a 3-0 start in the league. CMU is 13-10 overall and has won 10 of its last 12 starts. The Chippewas’ scheduled non-league game at Michigan State on Wednesday was postponed. The RedHawks (10-12) took two of three from Western Michigan in their MAC-opening series last weekend, and they dropped two mid-week non-league games to Tennessee Tech, 4-1 and 13-5. Jordan Foley will start Friday’s opener for the Chippewas against senior left-hander Seth Varner. Foley, a junior right-hander, is 3-2 with a 3.19 earned run average. He has struck out 35 and walked 16 over 36 2/3 innings. Varner is 4-1 with a 3.49 ERA. He has struck out 42 and walked 12 over 38 2/3 innings. Senior right-hander Pat Kaminska gets the call for CMU in Saturday’s game. Kaminska is 4-1 with a team-best 1.93 ERA. He has struck out 27 and walked just six in 42 innings. Junior right-hander Nathan Williams is slated to start Saturday’s game for the RedHawks. Williams is 1-3 with a 6.47 ERA, and has struck out 24 while walking 14 in 32 innings. Freshman left-hander Nick Deeg will start Sunday’s game for the Chippewas. Deeg is 2-1 with a 3.93 ERA and has struck out 28 while walking nine in 36 2/3 innings. Junior righty Ryan Powers goes for Miami on Sunday. He is 1-2 with a 6.12 ERA. He has struck out 23 and walked 19 in 32 1/3 innings. The Chippewa pitching staff emerged from the MAC-opening sweep of Ohio with a 2.91 team ERA, best in the league. The Chippewas have been led at the plate by junior Cody Leichman, who hit .429 and drove in five runs in leading CMU to its three wins over Ohio. Leichman, who is hitting .342 and shares the team lead with 23 RBI, was named the MAC West Division Player of the Week for the second time this season. The junior is on 17-game hitting streak. Logan Regnier continues to lead CMU in hitting at .370 and shares the team lead with his brother, Nick, with 21 runs scored. Shortstop Ryan Elble has played his way into the RedHawks’ starting lineup and, after getting just two at-bats in the first 12 games of the season, is hitting .462 with two home runs and seven RBI. Among those who have regularly been in the Miami lineup throughout the season, junior outfielder/catcher Max Andresen is hitting .364 and is second on the RedHawk roster with 15 RBI. |
