DeKALB, Ill. – Jordan Foley struck out five in firing a complete game Friday as the Central Michigan University baseball team downed Northern Illinois, 3-2, in the opener of a three-game Mid-American Conference series at Ralph McKinzie Field.
The win lifted CMU to 24-14, 11-2 MAC. The Chippewas lead the West Division by 1 1/2 games over Ball State, which fell to Western Michigan on Friday. The Cardinals are 9-3 in league play.
Foley (5-2), a junior right-hander, walked three and allowed seven hits. Both of the Huskies’ runs were unearned.
The Chippewas seized a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Alex Borglin’s two-out two-run single.
CMU extended its lead to 3-0 when Pat MacKenzie, who leads the MAC in walks, took a free pass leading off the fourth. MacKenzie took second base on a balk, and scored on Logan Regnier’s two-out single. Regnier finished with two hits.
The Huskies scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, taking advantage of CMU errors in both frames.
Foley allowed just three base runners in the final four innings, one on a walk, another on an infield single.
Northern Illinois got a one-out double in the ninth, then Foley retired the side with a flyout and a strikeout.
Anthony Andres (3-5) allowed six hits, walked four and struck out two over seven innings in taking the loss.
