Big Wins Lift Chippewa Wrestlers

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan wrestling team was able to get three huge victories on Sunday to claim a 19-13 Mid-American Conference dual meet victory over Kent State.
Senior Tyler Keselring (133 pounds) and freshman Jordan Ellingwood (174) defeated nationally ranked opponents. Keselring downed No.18-ranked Mack McGuire, 5-2, and Ellingwood took a 7-0 decision from No.14 Caleb Marsh.
McGuire is ranked first in the MAC, while Marsh is ranked third.
Central Michigan sophomore Jordan Wohlfert also had a crucial victory, edging Tyler Buckwalter 4-2 in overtime at 165. Buckwalter entered the match 22-12 on the season.
"I just kept believing in myself," Wohlfert said. "I knew he was getting tired and I feel like I'm in pretty good shape so when I turned him in overtime I knew it was over and he couldn't take me down."
Central Michigan also got victories from Brent Fleetwood (125), Zach Horan (141) and Colin Heffernan (149). Horan is ranked No. 11 nationally and first in the MAC, and Heffernan is ranked 15th nationally.
The Chippewas are 7-5 on the season and 5-1 in the MAC with two remaining conference duals. Third-ranked Missouri is the only other team with a better record in the MAC at 6-0.
"I'm encouraged by the way our guys are improving," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "If we keep going in the same direction as far staying focused and staying confident, I think we can have a real good MAC tournament."
The Chippewas will go to Edinboro, Pa., next Saturday for the Edinboro Open. They finish their MAC schedule by hosting 18th-ranked Old Dominion on Feb. 15, then travel to Eastern Michigan on Feb. 20.
