MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan wrestling team suffered a tough loss Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 20 Old Dominion in their final home dual of the season.
The Monarchs claimed victories in seven of 10 weight classes, defeating the Chippewas 22-9. CMU is 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the Mid-American Conference. CMU's two league dual losses came to top-20 teams, including now-No. 2 Missouri.
"We got toughed out today, and that's frustrating," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "We're just not quite there yet."
Borrelli said his team was disrespected today and was agitated by some of the things that happened on the Old Dominion bench.
"There was a lot of disrespect from their bench and it bothered me," Borrelli said. "But it doesn't matter if it bothers me, it has to bother the guys on our team, our guys have to grow up and not let that happen to them."
One of the positives of the afternoon came at the 141-pound weight class. CMU junior Zach Horan edged Old Dominion's Chris Mecate, 3-1, in double overtime. Horan entered the meet ranked first in the MAC and No.11 nationally; Mecate was third in the MAC and No.10 nationally.
"The good thing is he found away to win the match," Borrelli said of Horan, who is 14-4 on the season, 6-0 in the MAC. "(Mecate) is really hard to beat, but I'd like to see Zach be able to open it up a little more and distance himself from that guy."
Senior Tyler Keselring (133) and freshman Cody LeCount (157) were the only other wrestlers to record victories for the Chippewas. Keselring beat Michael Hayes, 2-0; and LeCount won 4-3 over Devin Geoghegan.
It was the final match in McGuirk Arena for Keselring and, along with fellow senior Malcom Martin, was honored before the meet.
"Anytime you have seniors that have put five years into the program it's pretty special," Borrelli said. "If you put up with me for five years I have a lot of respect for you.
"You understand what hard work is, you understand what perseverance is, and hopefully that's going to carry forward for those guys the rest of their lives."
The Chippewas will wrestle their final two duals of the season next weekend. They will go to Ypsilanti to wrestle Eastern Michigan in a MAC meet on Friday; on Saturday evening, they will wrestle at Michigan State in a non-conference dual.
The MAC Championships, hosted by Missouri, are March 7-8.
