MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - One more chance for coach Tom Borrelli take a good long look at his Central Michigan wrestling team.
The Chippewas will wrestle Sunday in the Michigan State Open (9 a.m.). More than two dozen CMU wrestlers are scheduled to partake in the event, which comprises some 250 wrestlers in 10 weight classes representing more than 20 institutions.
The Chippewas are scheduled to wrestle in two weeks at the Cliff Kenn Invitational in Las Vegas and at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. Both are considred among the best collegiate tournaments annually.
'The Cliff Keen, you enter 10 (wrestlers) and it's team scored," Borrelli said. "The Midlands is pretty selective. Really this is the last chance to see our whole team compete, see how they do against other people. It'll help us make some decisions."
The Chippewas are coming off a 22-10 nonleague win over Virginia in their dual-meet opener. Two weeks ago, the Chippewas put six wrestlers in championship matches at the season-opening Eastern Michigan open.
CMU junior Colin Heffernan was named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week after his 8-6 victory over Virginia's Andrew Atkinson in last Sunday's dual.
Heffernan, who is ranked 11th nationally up from 12th last week in the division by InterMat, improved to 6-0 on the season with an 8-6 win over the Atkinson, who is ranked 20th.
The Chippewas won seven of 10 matches against the Cavaliers. CMU moved up to 14th in this week's USA Today/National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings. It was ranked 17th last week.
Three other Chippewas are ranked individually by InterMat. Sophomore Justin Oliver is ranked eighth at 149 pounds, junior Jordan Ellingwood is ranked 13th at 184, and senior Brent Fleetwood is 20th at 125.
"I think we're in a good spot right now, but there's things we can do to get a lot better," Borrelli said.
