MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Jacksonville scored 12 first-half goals Friday in handing Central Michigan an 18-4 loss in an Atlantic Sun Conference lacrosse match at the Central Michigan Lacrosse-Soccer Stadium.
The Chippewas slipped to 4-7 overall, 0-3 league. They entertain Stetson on Sunday (noon) in an Atlantic Sun game. Jacksonville is 10-4, 5-0. The Dolphins are 21-0 all-time in conference games and are the three-time reigning Atlantic Sun champions.
"Jacksonville is one of those programs where they rarely make a mistake and execute well on both sides of the ball," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "When we face Jacksonville, we know that they are going to keep the foot on the gas pedal the whole time and they keep coming at you in waves so you really have to be on our toes.
"I thought our defense did a really good job, especially in the first couple of possessions coming up with some really key turnovers."
Summer Abdalla, Riley Huda, Logan Halvorson and Jocelyne Lemay scored the Chippewa goals. Dominique Hamman had 11 saves in the first half, taking the loss. Freshman Clare Laughery entered as goalkeeper in the second half and allowed six goals.
"I thought everyone competed for 60 minutes today, which has been a trademark of ours in that we don't give up or give in," Tisdale said. "Dom and Clare both got to play in goal today and they faced some really tough shots. To be the best, you have to play against the best. For them, to be able to come out and play strong and confident was great."
Taylor McCord, Rachel Aus, Ashtyn Hiron, Dani Dellarocca and Erin McGuire scored two goals each for the Dolphins.
"We look at this as an opportunity to get better and to face the best," Tisdale said. "We're going to have games where we have that lopsided score where it's 19-1 and we don't learn a ton from those kinds of games as individuals and as a team.
"The biggest thing for us is to learn to battle for ground balls. You see Jacksonville with their head down, fighting through balls and that is a tempo-setter."
Stetson, which dropped a 16-6 league game on Friday at Detroit, is 5-9, 1-4.
