EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State started the bottom of the first inning with four consecutive hits in seizing a 3-0 lead, and that's all the Spartans would need as they handed Central Michigan an 11-2 nonconference baseball loss on Tuesday at the Spartans' McLane Stadium.
The Chippewas (8-12) play Missouri State in their home opener on Friday (3:05 p.m.) at Theunissen Stadium. CMU and Missouri State are scheduled to play a three-game series. Saturday's game is set for 2:05 p.m. with the finale on Sunday slated to begin at 1:05 p.m.
CMU collected 10 hits against seven Michigan State pitchers, but stranded 13 baserunners and committed four errors. Twice the Chippewas left the bases loaded. The Spartans are 12-5.
Daniel Robinson and Dazon Cole had two hits apiece, and Nick Stokowski doubled to lead Central Michigan at the plate.
Freshman Zach Kohn (0-2) started for CMU and took the loss. He allowed seven runs (four earned) on eight hits, walked three and struck out seven.
Freshmen Jake Raether and Cameron Brown, along with junior Austin Smith, pitched in relief for the Chippewas, who surrendered 17 hits.
Both Chippewa runs, one in the second inning, the other in the eighth, came on bases-loaded situations. Grant Frazer walked to force in a run in the second, and Alex Borglin was hit by a pitch to force in another run in the eighth.
Walter Borkovich (4-0), the second MSU pitcher, earned the win. He went two innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Alex Troop had three hits to lead MSU at the plate.
