CMU Wrestlers Earn High Marks

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan ranked 15th in the nation academically and five Chippewas earned All-Academic recognition from the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
The Chippewas recorded a 3.298 team grade point average this season. Harvard topped the list with a 3.586. CMU was one of three Mid-American Conference teams on the NWCA Top 30. Kent State (3.423) was fourth and Eastern Michigan (3.341) ranked 10th.
Individually, CMU's Corey Keener, Mason Smith, CJ Brucki, Austin Severn and Newton Smerchek were named All-Academic, an honor bestowed upon those student-athletes who won 60 percent or more of their matches during the 2016-17 season and hold a GPA of 3.2 or better.
Keener, a senior physical education major, was also named to the team last year.
Smith is a redshirt freshman, Brucki and Smerchek are juniors, and Severn is a senior. Severn is an entrepreneurship major, Smith and Brucki are accounting majors, and Smerchek is majoring in physical education.
CMU's five All-Academic honorees is the most among MAC programs and is tied for the second-most nationally behind Stanford, which had seven.
