LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas scored three second-half goals to defeat the Central Michigan women's soccer team, 3-0, in the final game of the Rock Chalk Invitational on Sunday. CMU finished its opening weekend 0-1-1 after tying Tulsa, 1-1, on Friday.
The Chippewas will look forward to the future in preparation for their home opener at the CMU Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium, where they will play host to Robert Morris (0-2) on Friday (3 p.m.).
"We're excited to get back home to play in front of the fans," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "It will certainly be a lively atmosphere next Friday afternoon."
Despite being outshot 15-4 in the first half, the Chippewas played the Jayhawks (1-1) to a scoreless first half. Chippewa goalkeeper Zoie Reed proved to be a defensive highlight, recording five saves during the first half. She went the distance for CMU and finished with a total of eight saves.
"I thought Zoie Reed was absolutely outstanding today," McGahey said. "I think people will see the 3-0 scoreline and miss a really outstanding performance from Zoie."
Sophie Maierhofer recorded the first two goals for Kansas while Ceri Holland scored an insurance goal with just over two minutes remaining.
Kansas outshot Central Michigan 22-8.
"We remember that the season is long," McGahey said. "Sometimes the lessons that you have to learn to be a good team at the end of the season are difficult to swallow in the moment but we will certainly learn and grow."
