Chippewas' season comes to an end with 3-2 loss at Eastern Michigan
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Central Michigan Soccer needed a win over Eastern Michigan on Thursday to advance to the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Sadly, the Chippewas fell just short.
The Chippewas fell, 3-2, in overtime, finishing 7-12 overall with a 5-6 record in the MAC. The Eagles are 10-10 and finish 5-6 in the MAC, and will begin play on Sunday in the league tournament as the eighth and final seed.
CMU finished in a three-way tie for seventh place with Buffalo and Eastern, all with 15 points. With the first tie-breaker being head-to-head competition and losses to both EMU and Buffalo, the Chippewas are left on the outside looking in.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Haley Tausend scored off a corner kick in the 94th minute to break a 2-2 tie and give the Eagles the victory and end CMU's 2018 campaign.
The Chippewas trailed, 2-0, until late in the second half in a must-win situation. They battled back with a goal in the 70th minute by junior mid Marle Bringard, cutting their deficit to 2-1.
Redshirt freshman Riley Mann capitalized off a rebound in the 85th minute for her first career goal tying the game at 2-2 and forcing the extra session.
"We really did a fantastic job of playing for each other and pulling the game back to get it level at 2-2," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "Unfortunately it was heart wrenching to have (the game) taken from us with a corner kick."
SEASON ENDER
"Anytime a season ends, to say goodbye to a senior class as their career ends, is heart wrenching, it's sad, it's difficult for everybody from coaches to players to ask themselves what more could they have done," McGahey said. "You don't expect the journey of this season to end at this point."
THE NUMBERS
The Eagles outshot CMU, 15-11, but the Chippewas finished with a 7-6 edge in shots on goal.
CMU sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Britain finished with three saves.
