CMU garners three first at Grand Valley Holiday Meet
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Central Michigan indoor track & field team claimed three firsts in placing fourth in the combined team standings on Friday at the Grand Valley State Holiday Meet at the Lakers' Kelly Family Sports Center.
CMU's Samantha Cuneo won the women's 300-meter dash in 39.33 seconds; Janelle Perry won the women's long jump at 19 feet, 11 inches; Erin Howard won the women's shot put at 47-9.
The Chippewas placed fourth of the 25 teams in the women's team standings with 80.5 points, while the CMU men scored 34 points to place sixth of eight.
Junior Benjamin Hayes turned in the top finish for the CMU men as he placed second in the 300 in 34.27.
TOP CHIPPEWAS
The meet marked a strong return for Cuneo, who redshirted last season.
"It's obviously good to have Cuneo back in the lineup because she had to redshirt last year, so it's exciting to have her back and she had a really good race," CMU director of track & field Jenny Swieton said.
In addition to her win in the 300, Cuneo ran the anchor leg on CMU's 4x400 relay team, which finished third in 3:50.22. Simonae Dismuke, Nadia Williams and Perry joined Cuneo in the relay.
CMU junior Nadia Williams posted two top-five finishes. She was third in the long jump at 19-6 ¼, and she was fourth in the 60 at 7.62 seconds.
"Williams is someone we can count on and is a key performer for us," Swieton said. "I don't think there's been a time where she wasn't a key performer, and she's shown such great development. She did well last year, and the coaching staff sees some traits that are really great. You can see that this is going to be a big year for her."
CMU's Quiara Wheeler placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 58-11 ½, and teammate Marissa Dunn was eighth with a personal-record 55-7 ¾. The Chippewas' Calli Stemple placed third in the high jump at 5-4 ½, and sophomore Ana Garcia Arias was fourth in the 1000, finishing in 3:05.05.
Three Chippewa women placed in the pole vault. Rebekah Petty led CMU with a third-place finish at 12-3 ½; sophomore Kasey Staley tied for fourth, and freshman Siobh Szerencsits finished sixth.
Chippewa junior Ja'la Taylor placed eighth in both the women's long jump and the women's triple jump.
THE MEN
CMU got a fourth-place finish in the men's 4x400 relay. Two freshmen, Jeron Kelley and Gavin Jaime, combined with sophomores Roshawn Morton and Jack Dodge in posting a 3:21.22 finish.
A second CMU 4x400 squad, this one comprising freshmen Jackson Blanchard and Dante Lander along with Shane Moffo and Hayes, placed fifth in 3:22.0.
CMU junior Ryan Taylor placed fifth in the men's triple jump in 46-10 ¾, Morton was sixth in the 300 (35.29), and Kenneth Goolsby placed seventh in the mile (4:34.05).
STRONG START
Swieton said one of her bigger takeaways was how her freshman performed in their first collegiate meet.
Among the CMU rookie standouts were Kelley, Parker Aerts and Blanchard. Kelley finished fifth in the men's 60 in 6.91 seconds, while Aerts was sixth and Blanchard eighth in the men's 60 hurdles. Aerts finished in 8.37 seconds, Jackson in 8.51.
"To me, the story of the meet was the freshman men," Swieton said. "I think it was a good opener for them. It's super exciting for the future because they're doing so well, so quickly.
"All around, I was really happy with everybody and how they competed as well as how aggressive they were. None of them were afraid to push and to compete, and at this time of the year, I think it's important that you're competing. This was a good step in the right direction."
