Chippewas Vie For Coveted Spot In NCAA Championships

TAMPA, Fla. - Seven Central Michigan student-athletes will test themselves against the best of the best with the goal of a top-12 finish this weekend at the NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary at the University of South Florida.
The meet gets underway on Thursday and runs through Saturday. Each event features 48 participants and the top 12 finishers in each advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. June 6-9. The West Preliminary is scheduled to run simultaneously at Sacramento State in California. As with the East, the top 12 in each event in Sacramento advance to Eugene.
None of the seven Chippewas who are headed to Tampa are seniors.
One, freshman Erin Howard, has qualified in two events, the women's discus and the shot put. Howard goes into the preliminary with the 53rd-best discus throw, nationally, this season at 172 feet. Her best shot put, 51-11, is 55th nationally.
CMU's other qualifiers:
• Gabriella Beauvais, sophomore, women's 400-meter run. Beauvais' best time this season, 53.09 seconds, ranks 55th nationally.
• Shane Moffo, junior, men's 110 hurdles. Moffo's top time, 13.87, ranks 37th.
• Kevin Weiler, junior, men's shot put. Weiler's best throw, 58-1 ¾, ranks 82nd.
• Logan Targgart, sophomore, men's hammer throw. Targgart's best throw, 212-1, ranks 36th.
• Marissa Dunn, freshman, women's hammer throw. Dunn's best throw, 189-5, ranks 89th.
• Nadia Williams, sophomore, women's long jump. Williams' top leap, 20-1/4, positions her at 101st in the nation.
It is the second-consecutive year that Targgart and Williams have qualified for the preliminary.
