MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Despite outshooting Illinois-Chicago 14-2, a goal in the 78th minute by the Flames spoiled Senior Day for the Central Michigan on Sunday.
CMU (2-6) fell to UIC, 1-0, in its final nonconference game. The Chippewas open Mid-American Conference play on Friday (6 p.m.) against Ohio at the CMU Soccer Stadium.
"Highs and lows today," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "Really a great celebration before the game celebrating four fantastic seniors that have meant the world to our program."
Chippewas seniors Mary Carlson, Madison Costner, Shannon Magnan and Lexi Pelafas were honored in a ceremony before the game.
WHAT HAPPENED
CMU created several opportunities in the first half, generating six shots and three corner kicks, but could not convert.
The Chippewas remained aggressive, producing eight more shots and three more corners in the second half. Emily Valentine scored the game's lone goal on a deep shot in the 78th minute.
"For large stretches of the game we really put out a dominant performance and really kept UIC under a lot of pressure and created some chances," McGahey said. "Unfortunately, our chance didn't come today and they were able to take their chance and take off with the game."
SENIORS SHINING
Pelafas was credited with six shots including three on goal to lead the Chippewa offense.
DEFENSE
For the second consecutive game, McGahey said he was pleased with the overall defensive effort of his team.
"Overall I thought our defensive performance was very good," he said. "I thought our pressing looked very good creating a lot of turnovers and kept UIC under the gun."
BY THE NUMBERS
The Chippewas had a 5-2 shots on goal advantage and a 6-1 advantage in corner opportunities. Brianna Wallbridge made one save for CMU in goal while Haley Leanna had five saves for UIC.
