CMU looks to continue to build toward MAC Indoor Championships
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan track and field team is heading to South Bend, Ind. on Saturday to compete in the Notre Dame Invite.
Â
It is the first of two trips to Notre Dame during the indoor season for the Chippewas. They will return on Feb. 1-2 to compete in the Meyo Invitational.
Â
CMU and the host Irish will compete along with Illinois State, Louisville and Loyola (Chicago) on Saturday. Field events begin at 10 a.m., running events at noon.
Â
FAST START
The Chippewas won several events last weekend at their annual Jack Skoog Open, CMU's lone home meet of the year.
Â
Three of those firsts came from junior Nadia Williams, who set a program record in winning the women's long jump, and captured the 60-meter dash and the 200.
Â
"It would be really easy for the people who did well (at the Skoog) to get overconfident and not think that they still have to work hard," CMU director of track & field/cross country Jenny Swieton said. "We don't plan to do that. Everybody went back to practice and worked hard this week. … We're just concentrating on getting a little bit better every day."
Â
SATURDAY'S MEET
With all the solid performances turned in by the Chippewas at the Skoog, Swieton said it varies, from athlete to athlete, where they are in their development as they work, ultimately, toward a peak performance at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships
Â
"I think it's different for each individual," Swieton said, adding that several Chippewa runners are competing in "off" events, or those that they may not necessarily compete in as the season heats up.
Â
They do that, the reasoning goes, so that they "get into the racing mentality," Swieton said. "Then we have other people who are shifting towards their main events."
Â
NEXT
The Chippewas will head to YpsilantiI to compete in the Can-Am Classic at Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 26.
