Chippewa youngsters get a chance to shine
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Calli Stemple took home first place in the women's high jump to lead the Central Michigan indoor track & field team on Saturday at the Can-Am International at Eastern Michigan's Bowen Field House.
Â
Stemple, a senior, cleared 5 feet, 7 inches to win by 2 inches.
Â
"That was really big for Stemple, a (personal record) is awesome," CMU director of track & field/cross country Jenny Swieton said. "It was a really big day for her."
Â
The Chippewas rested several of their front-line competitors, opening the door for several of the younger Chippewa student-athletes to get a taste of competition.
Â
"This meet was a really good opportunity for the young athletes to shine, and they did that, they took advantage of the meet," Swieton said. "We're just trying to get better every day and I think they're getting more comfortable with competing, and it was nice for a lot of them to be at the front of the races or making the finals in the field events.
Â
"A meet like this lets them see that they're on the right track, and eventually they'll be in the same position (as the upperclassman). As a coach, I think that's exciting too because you can get wrapped up with the upperclassman and how they perform because they've been around for a long time. But to see younger athletes do big things makes us excited for the future."
Â
Other Chippewas placers:
Â
• Ja'la Taylor and Alexandria Robinson finished in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Â
• John Mitrzyk placed seventh place in the men's long jump.
Â
• One week after setting the CMU women's indoor program record in the pole vault, the duo of Rebekah Petty and Siobhan Szerencsits continued to impress, placing second and third, respectively. Petty vaulted 12-9 ½, while Szerencsits vaulted 12-5 ½.
Â
• Lauren Beckmann placed third in the women's mile in 5:05.49, while Kirsten Olling finished in fifth in 5:07.97.
Â
• Morgan Merlino placed third in the women's 1,000 in 3:04.24.
Â
• Three CMU men, led by Gavin Jamie, placed in the men's 400. Jamie placed third in 49.90, while Roshawn Morton was sixth and Jackson Blanchard was seventh. Blanchard also placed fifth in the men's 60 hurdles.
Â
"Jamie ran really well," Swieton said. "He destroyed everybody in his heat."
