Bringard, Reed honored for their performances in weekend sweep
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A Mid-American Conference-opening weekend sweep, and a sweep of the league's individual weekly awards.
Central Michigan's Marle Bringard was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week and Zoie Reed earned the league's Defensive Player of the Week Award for their respective performances in CMU's 1-0 victories last weekend at Ball State and at Miami (Ohio).
Bringard, a senior from Midland, had a weekend to remember, scoring both game-winning goals. On Friday at Ball State, she headed in a goal, off a pass from Samantha Kaye-Total, just before halftime as CMU handed Ball State a loss in its MAC opener for the first time since 2011.
On Sunday at Miami, Bringard saved the dramatics for double overtime, scoring in the 107th minute. She leads the Chippewas with three goals, all game winners, and seven points.
Reed, a senior from Woodbridge, Conn., had a flawless weekend in goal, posting four saves against Ball State and notching seven against the RedHawks. The shutouts were her second and third of the season, and she leads the MAC in goals against average (0.517) and in save percentage (.907).
The two victories lifted the Chippewas to 5-0-2 on the season. They hold an RPI of 44, best among MAC schools, and they moved up one place to ninth in this week's United Soccer Coaches Midwest Region rankings.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play two home MAC games this weekend, the first against Western Michigan on Friday (7 p.m.) and the second against Northern Illinois on Sunday (1 p.m.).
