CMU slated to play in Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodon Fall Invite
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan golf team will play its second-to-last event of the fall portion of its schedule this week when it partakes in the Mastodon Fall Invitational, hosted by Purdue Fort Wayne, at Pine Valley Country Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The first round of the 54-hole event is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start on Monday at 9 a.m. The second round is slated to follow. The third and final round is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday. Pine Valley will play to par 71 over 5,980 yards.
Scheduled to join the Chippewas and the host Mastodons in the seven-team team are Indiana State, Oakland, Bowling Green, Green Bay and Taylor.
CMU closes the fall portion of the schedule the following week when it hosts the first Chippewa Invitational at Birmingham Country Club.
The Chippewas finished seventh last week in the nine-team Mid-American Conference Fall Preview in Silver Lake, Ohio. It was their third tournament of the fall. They opened by winning the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Invitational in Rochester, and then posted a solid third-place finish at the Eastern Michigan Shirley Spork Invitational.
The win at Oakland was the first tournament victory for CMU since the program's resurrection in 2014-15.
"We need to get back to playing well," first-year CMU coach Jim Earle said. "We need to get back to posting five good scores. We didn't do that last week. I think the team's determined to have good scores."
The Chippewas have faced five of the six teams that they will see this week in Fort Wayne. CMU has finished ahead of all five of those opponents at one time or another this fall. Taylor, which is ranked 11th nationally in NAIA, is the lone school CMU has not encountered this fall.
"If we're able to get back to playing our game, we could have a lot of success in this event," Earle said. "We're working hard this week to give it our very best at a new tournament for us against some competition that is very comparable to us."
