CMU women head to Bradley, men to Indiana State
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The CMU men and women cross country teams will go their separate ways this weekend as both look to prepare for the most important stretch of the season.
The Chippewa men will travel to Terre Haute, Ind. for the Pre-National Invitational on Saturday at 12:50 p.m., while the women will head to Peoria, Ill., on Friday (3:15 p.m.) to compete in the Bradley Pink Classic.
Men
The CMU men have an opportunity to preview the course where the NCAA Championships will be run on Nov. 23. The Chippewa men will also look to position themselves for an at-large bid by finishing ahead of as many schools as possible. In short, the better the Chippewas run as a team, the better are their chances to qualify.
"This weekend is a really big weekend to try to get wins from other people, especially from the nationally ranked teams," said Jenny Swieton, CMU director of track & field/cross country. "For us, we're not in the spot to get wins yet, per se. It's just getting the guys on that stage and understanding what it takes to be that good."
Women
The Chippewa women will compete in the Bradley Pink Classic as opposed to Pre-Nationals. The Mid-American Conference Championship will be on their minds.
"We're going to Bradley versus pre-nats just because (Bradley is) more similar to the MAC meet," Swieton said. "It's bigger than the MAC meet, but as far as competition level … we want to go to Bradley to get that experience and that type of race, just so that they're comfortable going into the MAC meet."
Swieton said it's best for her young women's team to gain experience in this type of race rather than try their hand at pre-nationals at this point in their development.
"We're pretty young right now, and I just want to make sure we're ready for the MAC Championships," she said.
Coach Swieton
"Both genders are looking really, really good right now. I think, on both sides, we definitely see that we have the potential to do something really good for them and for where we're at right now, it's just got to come to fruition."
