Chippewa Invitational concludes on Tuesday at Birmingham CC
BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – Not the best day for the Central Michigan golf team in the opening round of the inaugural Chippewa Invitational.
The Chippewas posted just one sub-80 score on Monday in shooting a 322 team score. They are tied for eighth place with Detroit Mercy in the 13-team field at Birmingham Country Club. The final round of the 36-hole tournament is scheduled for Tuesday with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.
It is the final event of the fall schedule for the Chippewas, who, in four previous tournaments, have recorded a first-, a second- and a third-place finish.
CMU will have to play awfully well on Tuesday if it hopes to cap off the fall campaign with another solid finish. The Chippewas are hosting their first tournament since the program's resurrection in 2014-15.
"I thought the team scored poorly today," second-year Chippewa coach Jim Earle said. "We did not take advantage of the par 5s. We could have played the par 5s a lot better.
"It wasn't for a lack of effort out there, but we put the ball in the wrong spot too many times to score. And when you do that you're battling almost to make any number that's not going to kill you. It's all about personal redemption for each player on the team in the final round of the fall season. We know we're better than that.
"The course was excellent, the tournament is as unique and special as any tournament I've been to in my 17 years of coaching. Unfortunately we did not get the job done today."
Padgett Chitty shot a 7-over par 79 to lead CMU, while Meghan Deardorff and Zoe Vartyan both shot 80. Ashley Liles posted an 83, and Claudia Salvador came in at 85.
Chitty, one of four freshmen in the CMU lineup, is among a group tied for 27th in the 86-player field.
CMU's Rachel Leucuta and Julia Bice, playing as individuals, shot 82 and 93, respectively.
Saraniak Tumfong of Toledo and Katie Chipman of Grand Valley State both shot even-par 72 and share the lead. Jasmine Chee (74) of Western Michigan is two shots back.
The Broncos posted a 300 team total for a six-shot lead over Grand Valley (306). Northwood (307) is third.
