MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan lacrosse team kicks off its fifth varsity season with a big-name opponent when it goes to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame on Feb. 16.
The game with the Fighting Irish opens the 2020 slate that comprises 17 games.
Notre Dame is one of two teams on CMU's schedule that finished in the top 10 nationally last season and earned an NCAA Tournament berth. Michigan, which is scheduled to visit Mount Pleasant on April 20, is the other.
"These games are welcomed challenges and we're excited to see the growth and progress of our program as we face these respected opponents," said Sara Tisdale, the Chippewas' coach who has led the program since its inception. "There are plenty of familiar opponents (on the schedule) and also a few newcomers. This schedule presents the perfect balance of challenge and opportunity to prepare us in our quest to level up."
The Chippewas' home opener is scheduled for Feb. 23 against Butler, and they begin their third season in the Southern Conference with a game at Furman on March 27.
The Chippewas will again take on the likes of Cincinnati and Marquette, and will entertain both San Diego State and UC Davis, schools CMU visited a year ago.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play at Akron, the latest Mid-American Conference school to add women's lacrosse, on March 15 in a nonconference game (the MAC does not sponsor women's lacrosse as a league sport).
Central Michigan will host the Southern Conference Championship for the first time in program history in 2020. The postseason tournament will begin with semifinal games on Thursday, April 30, with the final set for Saturday, May 2. The top-four finishers in the SoCon regular season standings earn bids to the conference championship with the winner receiving a bid to the NCAA Championship.
