Chippewa Wrestlers Claim 4 Firsts At Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. – Fourteen Central Michigan wrestlers placed in their respective weight classes on Saturday at the inaugural Mountaineer Invitational, hosted by Appalachian State.
Four Chippewas, Matt Stencel (heavyweight), Drew Hildebrandt (125), Logan Parks (157) and Aaron Bolo (197), were crowned champions. Stencel, Hildebrandt and Parks competed in the invitational tournament, while Bolo competed in the open tourney.
Four other Chippewas, Ben Cushman (184), Dresden Simon (141), Landon Pelham (197) and Tracy Hubbard (165), each placed second, while three more, Drew Marten (141), Corbyn Munson (149) and Deven Perez (133), were fourth.
The Chippewas' Drake Pauwels (heavyweight) was fifth, while Jacob Gray (184) and Brock Bergelin (133) each placed sixth.
No team scores were kept. The field comprised CMU, Appalachian State, Air Force, Duke, Gardner-Webb, Kent State, Oregon State and West Virginia. Individuals from Virginia, Campbell, Chattanooga and Presbyterian also wrestled in the tournament.
Stencel and Parks both finished 4-0 on the day, while Hildebrandt and Bolo each went 3-0.
• Hildebrandt opened with a 7-2 win over Graham Shore of Air Force, then pinned Patrick Washington of Appalachian State in 1:09, and then defeated Sidney Flores of Air Force, 4-2, in the championship match.
• Parks posted a 16-0 technical fall of Austin Reames of Gardner-Webb, and then took a 14-0 major-decision victory from Trey Brisker of Air Force. Parks defeated Alex Hornfeck of West Virginia, 6-3, in the semifinals, and then topped Matt Zovistoski of Appalachian State, 3-2, in the championship match.
• Stencel posted back-to-back first-period pins to open the tournament, and then scored a 10-2 major-decision victory over Kayne Hutchison of Air Force in a semifinal bout. Stencel downed Cary Miller of Appalachian State, 3-1, in the title bout. Stencel pinned Oregon State's Christian Robertson in 37 seconds in his opening bout, and then pinned Sean Mullican of West Virginia in 52 seconds in his second.
• Bolo defeated Ethan Weatherspoon of Virginia, 3-2, in the title bout at 197 in the open tournament. Bolo posted back-to-back major-decision wins to reach the final. He downed Vincent Baker of Duke, 13-4, and then topped Jack Trautmann of Gardner-Webb, 14-0.
