MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan football player Robi Stuart has been named a Mid-American Conference Distinguished Scholar Athlete.
Â
Stuart, a junior defensive tackle from Saginaw, is one of 69 student-athletes including 17 football players covering seven fall sports sponsored by the MAC to be so honored.
Â
The Distinguished Scholar Athletes are recognized as the best of the best from each sport's All-MAC and Academic All-MAC teams.
Â
The 2019-20 school year is the sixth in which the conference has named Distinguished Scholar Athletes, those who have excelled both academically and athletically.
Â
Stuart is a neuroscience major who carries a 3.88 grade point average. He was named to the All-MAC Third Team after helping the Chippewas to an 8-6 finish, the biggest turnaround in college football this season. Stuart played an integral role as CMU won its first outright MAC West Division championship since 2009, and earned a berth in the New Mexico Bowl.
Â
Stuart finished the season with 32 tackles. Among his 9.5 tackles-for-loss were three sacks. He also was credited with three quarterback hurries.
Â
Following each season from the fall sports schedule, any student with a 3.20 grade point average and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was named to the Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. First-year students, junior college transfers, and graduate transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

The Distinguished Scholar Athlete honorees are all student-athletes who were named to their sport's All-MAC Team, earned Academic All-MAC honors, and maintains a 3.50 or above GPA.Â
Previously, a voting process among the MAC Faculty Athletic Representatives determined the selection of the Distinguished Scholar Athletes. MAC membership voted for the change in recognizing the Distinguished Scholar Athletes during the conference meetings in June.
Later this winter and spring, the MAC will announce the Distinguished Scholar Athletes from the remaining 16 winter and spring sports sponsored by the conference.
