Chippewas open the season this weekend at Vanderbilt
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Fresh off a highly successful indoor season, the Central Michigan track & field team will open the outdoor season this weekend when it travels to Nashville, Tenn. to compete in the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic on Friday and Saturday.
The Chippewa women placed first at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, CMU director of track & field Jenny Swieton was named the MAC Women's Coach of the Year, and CMU long jumper Nadia Williams earned All-America honors in the long jump, placing sixth at the NCAA Indoors Championships two weeks ago.
"I think (the MAC teams) are definitely going to come after us," Swieton said. "That's awesome because that means they respect us. There are still programs that are year after year really good and we know we have to be after them as well and stay ahead. Some programs are going to be a little hungrier, so we need to make sure we keep our game up, and we get better every day."
WHERE THEY STAND
Three Chippewas are among some the top 40 in the nation according on their respective rating index heading into the outdoor season. The rating index is based on performances from the 2018 season. CMU's Logan Targgart is 23rd in the men's hammer throw (65.15 meters); Shane Moffo is 34th in the men's 110-meter hurdles (13.87 seconds) and Janelle Perry is 37th in the women's 100 hurdles (13.23).
MOVING FORWARD
With all the accomplishments of the indoor season, as well as the return of some key athletes who did not compete for much of the indoor season, the Chippewas are prepared and excited to get the outdoor season started and start competing.
"We know that it's going to take hard work to replicate (the indoor season), but I think the team is ready to put in that work," Swieton said. "We're just trying to get better every day and hopefully that puts us where we want to be."
NEXT
The Chippewas will head to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State, on March 29-30.
