Central Michigan athletics has been a longtime partner with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and that relationship continues to thrive and grow.
"We are grateful for our partnership with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. Our relationship is centered on collaboration, commitment to education and engagement," said Zyzelewski Family Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Michael Alford. "This partnership is a top priority for the athletic department and entire university."
The partnership between athletics and the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe has, perhaps, been most evident with respect to the Central Michigan women's lacrosse program.
The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe has been an integral part of CMU lacrosse since the program's inception in 2016. CMU lacrosse has taken the opportunity to learn about the rich culture and history that is woven into the game. The program remains committed to embracing the strong cultural ties by continuing outreach and awareness efforts to assist in educating our future generations.
Quote from Louanna Bruner, "We share the Chippewa name and in doing so we must continue to strive to educate and highlight what it represents. We must also continue to bring awareness about the rich culture that helps others understand us as Anishinabe people. CMU Athletics continues to encourage this mission and for that we say Chi Miigwetch."
Recently, prior to a game, a special ceremony took place that further celebrated the strong bond between the program, CMU athletics, the University and the Saginaw Chippewa Indian tribe.
Â
A custom-built wooden box that will allow two traditional Native American lacrosse sticks to travel safely and securely with the team on road trips was presented. The team originally received the sticks as a gift from the Saginaw Indian Tribe during a blessing of the lacrosse field in the program's inaugural season.

"We know how special it is for us to have the relationship we have with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe," said CMU head coach Sara Tisdale. "We feel very special that they've chosen us to represent small elements that are important to their culture, whether it be the traditional sticks or the stick box, our players understand that (the relationship is important)."
