Chippewas open with two home games over Labor Day Weekend
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Year 2 of Central Michigan field hockey under Catherine Ostoich officially got underway on Wednesday as the Chippewas hit the field for their first practice.
"We saw a lot of progress last year with our student-athletes and this team, but they know how much more they can give and how much better we could be," Ostoich said. "So I think from the get-go it was already much better (on) day one than it was (on) day one last year. Definitely excited."
The Chippewas open the season with back-to-back nonconference home games, the first on Aug. 30 against Colgate, the second on Sept. 2 against Saint Louis.
The Chippewas also played both to open the 2018 season, and they posted a 1-0 victory over the Billikens for Ostoich's first victory as the Chippewa mentor. CMU posted a 1-0 Mid-American Conference victory over Ball State in its regular-season finale.
"Fitness and fundamentals were my two big things last year, and they still are," Ostoich said. "They probably will be for as long as I am coaching."
The Chippewas return leading scorer Samantha Glapinski along several other frontliners, including co-captains Georgina Minta and Taryn Damm along with the likes of Callie Quinn and Abigail Ebersole.
Ebersole was the backup goalkeeper a year ago and figures to be the starter this season.
The Chippewas' Mid-American Conference opener is scheduled for Sept. 20 at Longwood. Their rugged nonconference schedule includes five Big Ten opponents – Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Iowa and Indiana – along with two on the West Coast, Cal and UC Davis.
"I think it's all about getting better each game," Ostoich said. "By the time the conference tournament comes around we'll be ready to go and we are peaking and that's all you can ask for."
