MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan men's basketball team is set to open the 2020-21 season on Wednesday, Nov. 25, at home against Trine (5:30 p.m.)
That game with the Thunder, which plays in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, begins a six-game nonconference slate – four of which are on the road – followed by the Mid-American Conference opener at Western Michigan on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play at Illinois-Chicago on Saturday, Nov. 28, and then are set to make a trip to Miami, Fla. for two games on Dec. 1-2. The Chippewas will play Florida International on Dec. 1 and a to-be-determined opponent on Dec. 2.
That is followed by games at Western Illinois (Dec. 6) and at home against Valparaiso on Dec. 12.
CMU's MAC home opener is slated for Saturday, Jan. 2, against Miami (Ohio).
The MAC schedule comprises 20 games in 2020-21 with no divisional play. The top eight teams in the final standings advance to the league tournament in Cleveland in March.
The scheduling process was a roller-coaster ride, coach Keno Davis said, because of COVID.
"We previously had scheduled games with Butler, Wisconsin, Pittsburgh and we changed those games to be more regional," said Davis, who is in his ninth year in charge of the program. "We're trying to limit the amount of travel in order to keep our players as healthy as possible during these times. We're excited about the season starting. The guys have been working very hard in practice and we're looking forward to the season."
Trine finished 16-12 last season, bowing in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament; UIC finished 18-17, 10-8 in the Horizon League, in 2019-20; FIU went 19-13 a year ago, including 9-9 in Conference-USA; Western Illinois went 5-21 in 2019-20, 2-14 in the Summit League; Valparaiso was 19-16, 9-9 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Crusaders reached the league-tournament title game as the seventh seed.
Due to the recent State of Michigan Health Department order, currently no fans are allowed to attend games in McGuirk Arena. If that order is lifted, CMU Athletics is only allowing student-athlete and coach guests to attend games.
