MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Shannon Doyle scored four goals and Jessica Schuchardt finished with five assists on Sunday as the Central Michigan lacrosse team posted a 14-2 nonconference victory at the CMU Lacrosse-Soccer Complex.
It was the home opener for the Chippewas (1-1), who are scheduled to go to Cincinnati for a nonconference game on Sunday, March 1. The victory came one week after CMU opened with a 24-4 loss to seventh-ranked Notre Dame.
"I think top to bottom that game against Notre Dame last week got us ready for today and it showed," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "We played very composed, very mature. Even though it wasn't a super high-scoring game, I think we got the looks we wanted and then (we kept) a quality squad like Butler off the board.
"I'm really proud of the effort that we showed throughout."
Emma Hamilton added three goals for CMU, which outshot the Bulldogs, 29-12, and finished with a 23-8 edge in shots on goal. The four goals for Doyle and the five assists for Schuchardt were career highs for both players.
Hope Murray played the majority of the game in goal for CMU. She surrendered one goal while posting six saves. Sierra Savage and Erin Owens also played in goal for the Chippewas.
The CMU program record for goals allowed in a game is one. Sunday's game marked the fourth time in program history that CMU has held an opponent to two goals or less
"A little bit of a new defensive style today and I think they really owned it and got excited for it and you saw the result," Tisdale said. "Hope Murray, she was all over the place. You saw our defense take a lot of risks today. Brennan Paddy, Bri Hart, Kylee Frazier all played outstanding and Hope is truly a brick wall. Really proud of that effort."
