Chippewas make it a fantastic 4
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Sign it, seal it, deliver it.
Make it four and five straight.
Micaela Kelly scored 24 points and dished out eight assists while Molly Davis added 20 points as the Central Michigan women's basketball team claimed the Mid-American Conference regular-season title by defeating Western Michigan, 76-60, on Wednesday at McGuirk Arena.
It gave the Chippewas, 22-4, 15-0 MAC, their fourth consecutive MAC regular-season title and their fifth-straight MAC West crown. They have won 22 of their last 23 games and, with Wednesday's win, clinched the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament.
"To do something like this with the people that we get to do it with, with the assistant coaches and with this team, it's pretty incredible," said first-year head coach Heather Oesterle, who had served as an assistant for nine years with the program before taking the reins last summer. "The message to our team is that we're not done yet. We still have a lot more to do -- a lot more."
The Broncos, who had won four straight entering the game, are 15-11, 8-7.
How It Happened
CMU went on a 13-0 run beginning midway through the third quarter. Mackenna Kelly ignited it with a layup and then Micaela Kelly nailed back-to-back 3-pointers. A jumper from Gabrielle Bird and another layup from Mackenna Kelly left CMU on top, 60-47, with 1:29 left in the third. The Chippewas outscored the Broncos, 41-23, in the second half.
The Chippewas stretched their lead to as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter, making the final 10 minutes a celebration in front of 2,268 fans at McGuirk.
"I hope we have the same crowd (for the home finale) that we had here today, because that was incredible," said Oesterle. "The energy in here, I mean it was packed."
Leaders
Micaela Kelly and Davis combined to make eight of their 14 3-point attempts on the night.
The two guards were in sync and fed off each other's energy as the game progressed.
"The role that I have to play, I'm like a big sister (to Davis)," Micaela Kelly said. "I want to see my little sister smile and give her assists and like, energy."
Kyra Bussell scored 12 points and led the Chippewas with nine rebounds. Mackenna Kelly hit all eight of her field goal tries en route to eight points.
