Strong Competition Awaits CMU Track & Field At Notre Dame

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan track & field team travels to South Bend, Ind. this weekend to compete in the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational.
The two-day event begins on Friday (4 p.m.) and runs through Saturday. Competition on Saturday begins at 10:30 a.m.
Good Competition
CMU will see the likes of Big Ten schools Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue along with some of their Mid-American Conference rivals such as Eastern Michigan and Miami (Ohio).
The Meyo will feature some of the best competition CMU will see all season. In some of events, it is perhaps the most competitive meet in the country, CMU director of track & field Jenny Swieton said.
It will give the Chippewas a chance to see what they will face at the NCAA Championships, if they qualify.
"This is a good time of year to experience that type of competition," Swieton said. "There's a lot of events that are very competitive. This meet is definitely harder to qualify for than it is to qualify for the (MAC Championships). It's good for our athletes to get that jolt of energy from really high-level competition."
Chippewas in the Rankings
Nadia Williams, who on Tuesday was named the MAC Female Field Athlete of the Week, ranks No. 4 in the country in the women's long jump at 21 feet, 1 ¼ inches. She won the event by nearly 3 feet last weekend at the Chippewas' Jack Skoog Open.
Logan Targgart ranks No. 8 in the country in the men's weight throw after a season-best 71-4 at the Skoog.
Quiara Wheeler ranks No. 39 in the country in the women's weight throw with her program-record throw of 64-9 ¼ two weeks ago at the Eastern Michigan Can Am Classic.
An athlete with a mark ranked in the top 16 in the country qualifies for the March 13-14 NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Using Momentum
Several Chippewas recorded their best marks of the season last weekend at the Jack Skoog Open, CMU's only home meet of the year.
"Last week definitely gave (our student-athletes) more confidence," she said. "Now, it'll be exciting to see how they'll be able to handle that level of competition. For some of our student-athletes, they've been in the front of their races (or events) or they knew they would win or be top three in an event. That is absolutely not a given (this weekend).
"I want to see how they handle that, still compete to the best of their abilities, and see what they can get out of themselves."

CMU is scheduled to compete in the Grand Valley State Big Meet on Feb. 14-15 as they begin the stretch run to the MAC Championships. They will have one meet after that, the Feb. 21 Michigan Silverton Open, before the MAC Championships.
