CINCINNATI – Central Michigan came up one short in a game of three-goal runs on Sunday as the Chippewas fell to Cincinnati, 15-14, in a nonconference lacrosse match at the Bearcats' Gettler Stadium.
It was Cincinnati's (1-4) first win of the season. CMU is 1-2.
"We talked before the game about the importance of the small pieces," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "Eight meters, dot fouls, limiting second chances, and the draw. We did not make good enough adjustments or execute at a high enough level."
How It Happened
Cincinnati scored four-consecutive goals to take a 9-5 lead with under four minutes to play in the first half.
The Chippewas scored three times in the final 3:11 of the half to draw to 9-8 at the break and begin the string of three-goal bursts by both teams.
Cincinnati scored the first three goals of the second half, and the Chippewas answered with three; then the Bearcats scored three more, and the Chippewas answered. When the dust settled, however, the Chippewas could never get the equalizer. Tyra Prince scored CMU's final goal with 1 second to play, making it 15-14.
The Bearcats had the advantage in shots with 30 compared to CMU's 22, and shots on goal with 26 compared to CMU's 17.
Leaders
Natalie Karlen had four goals, four assists and eight points – all team highs – to lead the Chippewas, while Emma Hamilton added three goals.
"Karlen played incredible," Tisdale said. "She stayed composed when they put a face guard on and found a way to still make an impact."
In Goal
Sierra Savage, a freshman from American Fork, Utah, made her first career start as a Chippewa and made 11 saves in posting a .423 save percentage.
"I'm very proud of Savage," Tisdale said. "She made adjustments as the game went on and was a great leader."
