Guard earned All-America honors last season at Coffeyville Community College
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan men's basketball head coach Keno Davis announced on Wednesday the addition of Meikkel Murray to the Chippewa roster.
Murray, a 6-6, 190-lb. guard, has starred the last two seasons for Coffeyville Community College (Kan.). In 2020, Murray led the Red Ravens to a 26-8 record, including nine-straight wins to finish the season, en route to earning NJCAA Second Team All-America and Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Player of the Year honors.
"In Meikkel, we are getting someone that helped lead Coffeyville to a two-year record of 57-12, and two national tournament bids, in arguably the best JUCO conference in the country," said Davis. "In helping his team win, Meikkel also received many individual accolades including being named All-American and player of the year in the east division of the Kansas Jayhawk Conference. Meikkel can impact the game on both ends of the court with his talent and the intensity with which he plays."
Playing in 34 games, Murray averaged 16.7 points, on 50 percent shooting, and 7.4 rebounds per game in 2020 to also receive KJCCC East First Team and All-Region VI First Team
recognition last season. He surpassed the 20-point mark in 11 games, including a season-high 28 versus Cowley County Community College. Murray's sophomore campaign was highlighted by a game-winning buzzer beater in the 2020 Region VI Championship game, earning Coffeyville the No. 15 seed in the 2020 NJCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament and himself the Region VI Tournament Most Outstanding Player award.
"Meikkel is great to coach," said Coffeyville head coach Jay Herkelman. "In the two years he was with us, Meikkel continued to take his game to the next level and then the next. He is a very athletic, exciting player and is extremely coachable. Meikkel is an everyday guy and as a coach you really appreciate his approach."
Murray was also named 2019 KJCCC Freshman of the Year and received All-KJCCC Honorable Mention recognition after averaging 9.3 points and 7.1 rebounds for Coffeyville in 2018-19.
Hailing originally from Bronx, N.Y., Murray led Amherst Regional to three straight Western Massachusetts Division 1 championship games before transferring to Lee Academy in Maine for a post-graduate year.
