Soccer Program Welcomes Assistant Coach With Michigan Roots

Keyton Wheelock sports impressive resumé
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan soccer coach Jeremy Groves has named Michigan native Keyton Wheelock as his assistant coach.
"I'm really happy that we have again attracted a quality assistant coach to our program," said Groves, who is in his second year in charge of the program. "Keyton is proven at a high level. To have this type of experience is going to be huge. I'm so excited to welcome Keyton to CMU. She is going to help us reach our goals of taking CMU back to the top of the conference."
Wheelock, who hails from Cedar and graduated from Traverse City West High School, spent the 2016-19 seasons as the head coach at Louisiana at Monroe. In 2016, she was named the Sun Belt Coach of the Year.
She served as an assistant coach at South Alabama from 2013-15 and in 2015 earned the United Soccer Coaches South Region Mooch Myernick College Assistant Coach of the Year Award. She helped lead the Jaguars to two Sun Belt Conference regular-season championships and three league-tournament titles.
"At South Alabama she was a huge part of their success," Groves said. "They were consistently top 50 RPI and she coached numerous Sun Belt Conference players of the year."
Wheelock started her college coaching career at Division II Tusculum College in Greenville, Tenn. She also has coached club soccer in Traverse City and in St. Paul, Minn.
Wheelock holds several certifications from United Soccer Coaches. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with a. major in kinesiology from Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn., and her Master of Arts in Education from Tusculum.
She played one year at South Dakota and then earned three letters at Concordia. She earned All-North Sun Intercollegiate Conference honorable mention in 2008.
