MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan's Maria Kaschalk was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week for women's soccer after helping lead the Chippewas to a four-point week.
Kaschalk, a senior defending midfielder from Macomb, scored the golden goal off a free kick from 30 yards out in CMU's dramatic 3-2 double-overtime victory over Ohio on Sunday in CMU's Senior Day.
It was Kaschalk's first goal of the season, and it kept the Chippewas in sixth place – the final MAC Tournament spot – in the league standings.
Kaschalk also played a key role in the midfield in CMU's 1-1 tie at Kent State earlier in the week.
Kaschalk and the Chippewas play at Eastern Michigan on Thursday (3 p.m.) in their regular-season finale. If they win, they earn a berth in the conference tournament, which is scheduled to begin on Sunday.
