Soccer Falls In MAC Tournament Game

BUFFALO, N.Y. – On the whole, extra time had been kind to Central Michigan throughout the 2021 season.
Not so on Sunday in the Chippewas' Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinal with Buffalo at the Bulls' UB Stadium.
Payton Robertson scored in the 105th minute as Buffalo handed CMU a season-ending 2-1 loss.
"We fought," CMU coach Jeremy Groves said. "We fought until the very end. That's all I can really ask of them. I'm really happy with them.
"They never give in, and that's got to be the first building block to build a championship-winning team. I'm so disappointed that they didn't get to experience (a championship), especially for the seniors.
"I think the younger kids will, but the seniors, they worked really hard all season and it ends today for them."
Two penalty kicks in the first 16 minutes of the match left it 1-1 until Buffalo's game winner some 90 minutes of game time later.
Samantha Kaye-Toral scored for CMU. It was her team-high fourth goal of the season.
Buffalo finished with a 15-9 advantage in shots including 7-3 in shots on goal. The Bulls had 12 corner kicks to CMU's one.
CMU goalkeeper Allison LaPointe made five saves.
CMU finished 9-8-1. The Chippewas went 5-3-1 in extra-time games this season. All but two of CMU's games were decided by one goal.
"You look back on the season, I don't think it's that crazy for us to think that we could have been MAC champions," said Groves, who concluded his third season in charge of the program. "I just want to thank our seniors. They've been here since I've been here, since day one, and they've really created a foundation for this thing to be built. I just really appreciate all their hard work."
While Kaye-Toral led CMU with four goals this season, redshirt freshman Gaelle Wells and sophomore Elizabeth Chlystun tied for second on the team with three each. Sophomore Jaelyn Dobrowolski led CMU with 10 points (two goals, six assists).
