MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The inaugural Mid-American Conference women's lacrosse season highlights a very ambitious and challenging schedule with several high-profile opponents for Central Michigan in 2021.
The Chippewas are slated to open their sixth season of lacrosse on the road on Friday, Feb. 19 at Notre Dame, and then are scheduled to go to Vanderbilt on Feb. 24, giving the CMU opponents from the Atlantic Coast and American Athletic conferences right out of the chute.
The Chippewas are then slated to play another high-profile opponent from a Power 5 conference when they entertain Oregon in their home opener on Feb. 28. That begins a four-game stretch of home games during which CMU will renew acquaintances with Marquette, Detroit Mercy and Cincinnati.
"We are excited for the challenge of playing our most competitive non-conference schedule in our program's history," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "This schedule helps put our program on a national stage. Team 6 is taking the field every day with the goal of bringing home the first ever MAC women's lacrosse title."
The Detroit Mercy game, scheduled for March 7, will serve as the Chippewas' MAC opener in the first season that the league has sponsored a championship for women's lacrosse.
The MAC has welcomed Detroit Mercy, Youngstown State and Robert Morris as affiliate members for women's lacrosse, while full-fledged league members Kent State and Akron round out the league.
CMU will play each of its five MAC brethren both home and on the road, giving the Chippewas 10 conference games that culminate on May 8 at home with Youngstown State.
The Chippewas participated in the Atlantic Sun Conference during their first two years of varsity play (2016-17) and in the Southern Conference from 2018-20 (the 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID after CMU started 2-3 in nonleague games). CMU won the SoCon regular-season title in 2018.
