Chippewas improve to 2-1
TOLEDO, Ohio – Natalie Belsito scored in the 72nd minute to break a 1-1 tie on Friday, lifting Central Michigan to a 2-1 Mid-American Conference soccer victory over Toledo at the Rockets' Paul Hotmer Field.
It was CMU's second-consecutive win. The Chippewas are 2-1-0 both overall and in the MAC. Toledo is 0-3-0. CMU plays host to Western Michigan on Thursday, March 18 (3 p.m.) at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
"It was a pretty scrappy game," CMU coach Jeremy Groves said. "We created a ton of chances. Their goalkeeper made some really good saves and they had a couple of players clear some off the line. We had some chances to put the game to bed way before we did.
"It was a physical game. They worked hard and didn't make anything easy for us today. They were physical and we had to match that. Toledo was a lot more direct in their style of play and we had to deal with that, and as the game went on, we dealt with it a lot better. Good sign."
The Rockets took a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 12-minute mark. Demetriou Fotini, a junior transfer from Oakland, scored her first goal as a Chippewa off a Katie Coleman corner kick in the 30th minute to tie it.
"I'm disappointed that we went one down, but it gave us something that has not happened before in the first two games, so we had to react a little bit, fight back and we did that," Groves said. "As soon as they (scored) we got a response right away and we went on the front foot.
"They were a little bit more dominant the first 15, 20 minutes. They were really physical and they worked hard. We had to match that."
Belsito's goal was her team-leading third of the season.
The Chippewas finished with a 16-7 edge in shots including 9-4 in shots on goal. CMU also had 10 corner kicks to the Rockets' two.
Freshman Allison LaPoint made three saves in goal for CMU.
