MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Two members of the Central Michigan lacrosse team were honored by the Mid-American Conference on Thursday for their performances in the Chippewas' two games last week, a 16-10 loss at No. 25 Vanderbilt and a 12-11 overtime home victory over Oregon.
CMU's Natalie Karlen earned the Offensive Player of the Week Award, and Brianna Hart was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Week with Akron goalkeeper Ashley Lapp.
Karlen, a senior attacker from Hagerstown, Md., had two goals, two assists, and four draw controls as the Chippewas went toe-to-toe with Commodores. She had a career-high-tying six goals in helping CMU rally from a 7-4 deficit to beat the Ducks. Karlen scored the Chippewas' first four goals of the second half. Her six-goal effort ranks No. 2 in the program record book.
Karlen leads the Chippewas with 10 goals, three assists and 13 points. She needs 11 points to become CMU's all-time leader.
Hart, a senior defender from South Bend, Ind., led a strong defensive effort against Vanderbilt, finishing with three caused turnovers, three ground balls, and one draw control. Against Oregon, Hart was instrumental when the game was on the line, utilizing her speed to cut through the Oregon defense and clear the ball into the CMU offensive zone during a critical exchange late in the game. She had four draw controls, four ground balls, and one caused turnover in the game.
Hart leads CMU in caused turnovers (6) and is second in ground balls (9).
