KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan scored twice in the final 16-plus minutes on Thursday to hand Central Michigan a 2-1 Mid-American Conference soccer loss at the WMU Soccer Complex.
It was the third-consecutive loss for the CMU (4-4). Western (5-2-2) won its third straight game.
Freshman Jaelyn Dobrowolski scored CMU's goal in the 69th minute on an assist from Natalie Belsito. It was Dobrowolski's second goal of the season and it was Belsito's team-leading third assist.
Western Michigan evened the score just over five minutes later when Bailey Korhorn scored and then the Broncos got the go-ahead goal in the 82nd minute. Morgan Otteson scored; Korhorn assisted.
The Chippewas outshot Western, 13-8, and finished with five shots on goal to the Broncos' two.
"We are lacking a little bit of quality in the final third," CMU coach Jeremy Groves said. "And we are making more mistakes, and we are getting punished for it.
"They only had those two shots on goal, and that shows right there that they are finishing in the final third, and we are not."
The Chippewas are scheduled to close the season at home on Sunday, April 11 (1 p.m.) with a game against Northern Illinois. CMU defeated the Huskies, 3-0, in DeKalb, Ill. on March 21.
"Our performance has actually been pretty good the last few games, the results are just not showing," Groves said. "It is the key moments in the game, both ways: the final third and the penalty box. The way that we are competing is good, we just need to be more clinical."
