TOLEDO, Ohio – Good performances in a warmup for the NCAA East Regional Championships for a select number of Central Michigan track & field student-athletes on Saturday at the Toledo Rocket Invitational.
CMU's Quiara Wheeler placed second in the hammer throw and in the discus, and Marissa Dunn was fourth and Maya Bennett placed fifth in the hammer throw in an attempt by all of them to further solidify their respective qualifying spots and seedings in the NCAA East Regional, which begins on May 25.
Dunn, a senior, threw a season-best 58.47 meters (191 feet, 10 inches) in the hammer throw and that distance puts her in good position to qualify for the regional. She placed fourth.
Wheeler threw 62.25 (204-2) in the hammer, while Bennett's best measured at 59.29 (184-8). Neither recorded her top throw of the year, and both should make the regional field based on their season best, Wheeler at 63.27 and Bennett at 58.92.
Wheeler's second-place throw in the discus measured at 45.96 (150-9).
CMU freshman Ashlyn Nagel placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday in a personal-best 17:32.81. It came on the heels of her PR 36:31.27 in the 10K at the Mid-American Conference Championships.
"It was good for Ashlyn to go in and get a PR," CMU coach Jenny Swieton said. "She hasn't gotten a chance to compete much this season and coming off her 10K performance at the MAC, it was kind of nice to solidify that with another good performance in the 5K."
CMU's Kasey Staley (pole vault) and Hayley Manners (long jump) are scheduled to compete on Sunday at the Akron Field Events Qualifier.
