Chippewas Celebrate Successful Day at Spartan Invite

Chippewas take top three spots in the 200m, post 17 podium finishes.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Central Michigan Track & Field traveled south to Michigan State to take on the Spartan Invitational Friday, it was the programs final tune-up before hosting the Chippewa Challenge April 11.
The day began with distance runners taking on the 5000m. Two Chippewas finished in the top 10, Logan Brazee took sixth with a personal best time of 17:54.18; Ava Teed crossed at 18:04.5 for eighth overall.
Linnearia Richards, competed in three events, taking first place in the long jump and second in the 100m hurdles. Richards recorded a best of 5.62m in the long jump and finished the 100m hurdles in 15.16 seconds. She ended her day in the 400m hurdles, where she took fourth place with a 1:03.53 showing.
Libby Munderloh joined Richards in the 400m hurdles and took third overall in 1:03.24.
The 200m dash team swept the top three spots courtesy of the trio Sophia Garland, Danica Shamion, and Ella Sweatt. Garland led the way with a 24.78 showing followed by Shamion with a personal best of 25.07, and Sweatt finished out the sweep with a 25.39 second performance.
It was great to get out and compete today, Central Michigan Director of Track & Field Jenny Swieton said, Conditions weren't the best today and I think that can be good early in the season. It teaches everyone to compete and control what they can. We did that very well today.
The 4x100 relay team of Shamion, Garland, Andrea Merin, and Sweatt finished in 46.78 seconds, good for a second-place finish.
Victoria Merrick took second of 14 in the discus throw, peaking with a 42.49m throw on her second attempt.
Mireya Benjamin was the lone Chippewa to compete in the 100m dash, she took fifth place overall with a 13.00 second performance.
Emma Janesak, Emma Netzel and Nikki Carothers took on the 3000m steeplechase taking third, sixth, and seventh place, respectively. Janesak crossed at 11:12.43, Netzel clocked 11:36.67, and Carothers rounded out the Chippewas team at 11:5876.
Robyn Watts took second, and Nicole Olivieri took fifth in the 400m. Watts crossed the finish line in 57.76 seconds, and Olivieri recorded a 1:00.28 performance.
Maya Guikema competed in the 1500m, where she finished in 4:33.44 for fourth place overall. Mara Szuper joined Guikema with a 5:06.86 finish.
Jessie Gibbins and Guikema ended the Chippewas' day with the 800m. Gibbins led the way with a seventh-place finish in 2:15.09, while Guikema took 16th at 2:21.22.
Central Michigan Track and Field will return April 11, as CMU will host the Chippewa Challenge at the Lyle Bennett Outdoor Track.
