Wrestlers Roll To Fifth-Straight Win

DeKALB, Ill. – Central Michigan posted three bonus-point victories on Friday in claiming a 33-6 victory at Northern Illinois in a Mid-American Conference wrestling dual.
The win was CMU's fifth consecutive as it improved to 6-2, 2-0 MAC. The Huskies are 4-6, 1-3.
CMU is scheduled to wrestle on Sunday at SIU Edwardsville. It will take on the host Cougars in a MAC dual at noon and then will wrestle South Dakota State on a nonleaguer at 4 p.m.
On Friday at NIU, the Chippewas got a pin victory from Matt Stencel at 285 pounds, a technical fall from Corbyn Munson (149), and a major-decision win from Johnny Lovett (157) to highlight the dual.
CMU's Brock Bergelin (125), Dresden Simon (141), Tracy Hubbard (165) and Aaron Bolo (197) each won by decision and Ben Cushman (184) won by forfeit.
"I was happy for the most part," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "There's always things we can get better at, but for the most part we took the matches to them. We were pretty aggressive in trying to score.
"We could stand around and try to win 3-2 matches or try to win 4-3 matches, but we're trying to get the mentality that we're going to score as many points as we can, wrestle the whole seven minutes. We tried to do that as much as possible today.
"I think when we needed to be good on top, we were, which is important. When you can't take the guy down, it's real important to be able to ride him and turn him."
It was the seventh pin of the season for Stencel, who is 8-3 and ranked ninth nationally. It was Munson's team-leading fourth tech fall of the year as he improved to 16-4, winning for the 10th time in his last 11 matches. Munson is ranked 27th nationally.
Lovett, who is ranked 18th, improved to 12-4 with his second straight major-decision win.
The Huskies wrestled without two of their top wrestlers – 17th-ranked Izzak Olejnik (165) and 20th-ranked Brit Wilson (184) -- and were missing at least one other front liner.
"I just appreciate them wrestling us," Borrelli said. "They didn't have to wrestle us. They've had some COVID issues, and they had some guys out of their lineup. I just appreciate them wrestling the match."
