MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The flipping of the calendar to 2022 brings with it a busy week for Central Michigan Athletics as the men's and women's basketball, wrestling, track & field, and gymnastics teams are also scheduled to compete.
The Chippewa basketball teams open the busy week with back-to-back home games on Tuesday and Wednesday. The CMU men are set to entertain Toledo on Tuesday, while the Chippewa women are slated to play host to Western Michigan on Wednesday.
Both games are Mid-American Conference contests, and both tip off at 7 p.m.
The Chippewa men are 2-10, 1-0 MAC after winning at Kant State, 72-69, in their league opener last week. The CMU women are 3-8, 1-1 after downing Northern Illinois on Saturday, 72-68.
The Toledo men are 9-4, 1-1, after falling at Kent State, 66-63, on Saturday. They opened MAC play with an 83-56 win at Western Michigan. The WMU women are 7-3, 1-0, after a 55-51 victory over Kent State.
The CMU men are scheduled to entertain Western Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. The Chippewa women are set to play on Saturday (1 p.m.) at Eastern Michigan.
• The CMU wrestling team returns to the mat for the first time in 2 ½ weeks when it goes to Northern Illinois on Friday (7 p.m.) for a MAC dual.
The Chippewas are 2-2, 1-0 MAC, and last wrestled in the Journeyman Collegiate Duals in Florida on Dec. 20-21. CMU finished 1-2 in that event, defeating Binghamton after falling to No. 1 Iowa and to No. 17 Lehigh.
The Chippewas were scheduled to compete in the Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30 in suburban Chicago. The tournament was cancelled because of COVID concerns.
CMU is scheduled to entertain CSU Bakersfield, American and Campbell in the Chippewa Challenge on Sunday, Jan. 16 at McGuirk Arena. The three opposing teams are coached by former Chippewa wrestlers and protégés of CMU coach Tom Borrelli. They are Jason Borrelli (American), Scotti Sentes (Campbell) and Luke Smith (Bakersfield).
• The Chippewa gymnastics team opens the season at McGuirk Arena on Sunday (1 p.m.) with a nonconference meet with Illinois.
The Chippewas are slated to open MAC competition on Friday, Jan. 14 (6 p.m.) at Eastern Michigan.
• The CMU track & field team resumes its indoor season on Saturday (11 a.m.) at the Wolverine Invitational at the Michigan Indoor Track Building.
It is the second competition of the 2022 indoor season for the Chippewas, who opened the season with a third-place finish at the 18-team Grand Valley State Holiday Open on Dec. 3.
The Chippewas are set to host the Central Michigan Invitational on Friday, Jan. 14, at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track in the Indoor Athletic Complex. It is the first of two indoor meets that CMU is scheduled to host in 2022.
