MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan's Molly Davis and Marshall Meeder have earned the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week Award.
Meeder, a freshman placekicker, kicked three field goals in CMU's 24-21 victory over Pac-12 member Washington State in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas on New Year's Eve.
Meeder connected on kicks of 49, 52 and 43 yards as CMU finished 9-4 on the season, recording its highest win total since 2009, its first bowl victory since 2012, and its first win over a program from a Power 5 conference since 2017.
Meeder's 52-yarder was a CMU bowl record and his 43-yarder, which came with under 10 minutes remaining, eventually proved to be the difference in the game. Meeder, who hails from Eaton Rapids, is a mechanical engineering major who carries a 3.02 grade point average.
Davis, a junior guard, averaged a double-double – 27.5 points, 11 assists -- in two games last week for the Chippewa women's basketball team. She tied her season high with 32 points and had 10 assists and five rebounds in CMU's 72-68 come-from-behind victory over Northern Illinois. She hit five 3-pointers in the game and was seven for eight from the free throw line.
Davis had a career-best 12 assists along with 23 points in CMU's 93-75 loss at Buffalo. Her 12 assists mark the second-highest total for a MAC player this season. Her two 32-point games also mark the second-highest total for a MAC player in a game in 2021-22.
In the two games combined, Davis made 20 of her 39 field goal attempts (51.2 percent) overall and was seven for 17 (41.1 percent) from 3-point range.
Davis, who hails from Midland, is an exercise science major with a 3.88 grade point average.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and perform well during the previous week's competition. The weekly winners, one male and one female, are selected in a vote of faculty athletics representatives of each MAC institution.
