MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan wrestling team is set to open the 2022-23 season on Monday, Oct. 24 with its annual maroon & gold intrasquad dual at McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas' first intercollegiate competition is set for Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Michigan State Open, the first of four pre-New Year's individual tournaments.
The remainder of those tournaments are the Army Black Knight Invitational in West Point, N.Y. (Nov. 20), the Cleveland State Open (Dec. 11), and the Midlands Championships in Chicago (Dec. 29-30).
The Chippewas will also partake in the National Collegiate Duals in New Orleans (Dec. 19-20) in a stacked 12-team field that includes eight teams that are ranked in the preseason top 25 including No. 1 Penn State.
CMU is slated to welcome Clarion in its Mid-American Conference-opening dual on Jan. 8, which is the first of three consecutive home duals. Northern Illinois (Jan. 13) and SIUE (Jan. 15) are also slated to visit McGuirk Arena during that stretch.
The Chippewas will also wrestle a home MAC dual with Kent State (Feb. 5) and will go to Ohio (Jan. 29) and to Buffalo (Feb. 12) for league duals.
The Chippewas will also hit the road for a dual at Duke (Jan. 19) and for the Chippewa Challenge (Jan. 22) at Campbell, where CMU will take on the Camels, Cal State Bakersfield and American.
CMU, Campbell, Bakersfield and American met last season in the inaugural Chippewa Challenge in McGuirk Arena. The Chippewas' three opponents in the challenge are coached by former CMU wrestlers, Scotti Sentes (Campbell), Luke Smith (Bakersfield) and Jason Borrelli (American), who is the son of CMU coach Tom Borrelli.
CMU closes the regular season with nonconference duals with instate rivals Michigan State and Michigan. The Spartans will come to McGuirk Arena on Feb. 17, while CMU goes to Michigan on Feb. 19.
The MAC Championships are set for March 3-4 in Fairfax, Va., hosted by George Mason; the NCAA Championships are slated for March 16-18 in Tulsa, Okla.
